Westfield State freshman Alex Honey picked up his second win on the year, going six innings while allowing five hits and one earned run, with zero walks as the Owls defeated Elms College 4-1 at Bud and Jim Hagan Field on Wednesday.
After letting up a run in the first inning, Honey pitched a scoreless five innings, striking out two.
The Owls scored two runs in the third inning to gain the lead for good.
Westfield's Sean Moorhouse led off the third inning with a double to give Westfield their first hit of the game. Junior Michael Cruz had a base hit to center to score Moorhouse. Cruz wreaked havoc on the base paths as he stole second and third base, putting himself in a good position to score on a sacrifice fly from Colin Dunn to give the Owls the lead.
The Owls added an insurance run in the fourth inning on a wild pitch and in the sixth inning on a fielder's choice making it 4-1.
The bullpen did its job as sophomore Patrick Jordan pitched a scoreless seventh inning and senior Scott Strachan pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
Sophomore Trevor Edwards came in relief in the ninth inning to earn his second save on the season.
Honey improved to 2-0 on the year.
Westfield's Tyler Beach finished 2 for 3 at the plate.
Pat Krol took the loss in relief for Elms after starter Thomas Owens went two innings. Thomas Slane, Cameron Griffin, and Nathan Ayala each had two hits for Elms College (2-9).
Westfield State is now 7-4 on the season. The Owls will be traveling to Worcester State on Friday March 29th to play in their first conference game of the year.
