Owls Rally Past Coast Guard, 12-8

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Sophomore Brett Dooley's (Gunnery/Cohasset, Mass.) 2-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning drove in the go-ahead run as Westfield State rallied from an 8-1 deficit in the seventh inning to defeat the US Coast Guard Academy, 12-8, in a non-conference baseball game at Bud and Jim Hagan Field on Monday.

Westfield trailed 8-1 after the top of the seventh inning, but the Owls found some five o'clock lightning, scoring four runs in the seventh, and six in the eighth to post the win.

Westfield improves to 12-11-1 on the season, while Coast Guard drops to 6-12.

In the seventh, junior All-New England outfielder Anthony Crowley (Bellingham, Mass.) drove in two runs with a single, and Casey Boudreau (Shrewsbury, Mass.) delivered an RBI double down the left field line to trim the Bears lead to 8-6.

In the bottom of the eighth, John Lippincott (Northwestern Reg./Barkhamsted, Conn.) led off with a base hit, and the next three men walked to force in a run. Dooley knocked a base hit through the right side that plated Kyle Murphy (Westfield, Mass.) and Colin Dunn (Westfield, Mass.) with the tying and go-ahead runs. The Owls added two more runs when designated hitter Aaron Clancy (Catholic Memorial/Quincy, Mass.) laid down a surprise sacrifice bunt attempt, which he legged out and a throwing error let two more runs score.

Sophomore transfer reliever Dan Pingeton (Wachusset/Sterling, Mass.) picked up his first win as an Owl after working a scoreless top of the eighth. Tyler Tongue (Minnechaug/Hampden, Mass.) came on to work the ninth and managed a shutout inning to finish the game in a non-save situation.

Coast Guard had taken a 5-1 lead with four runs in the fourth, as four hits, and error a balk, helped push the runs across. Tom Ankers (Manassas, VA) and Jeremy Lhotka (Orange Park, Fla.) had RBI singles in the inning.

The bears extended that lead in the seventh, scoring three times after a leadoff triple from Will Stephens (Raleigh, N.C.) and RBI singles from Alex Murdoch (San Ramon, Calif.) and Reed Jenkins (Brown Summit, N.C.).

Owen Hurley (Colfax, Calif.) took the loss in relief for Coast Guard.

Westfield State will be idle tomorrow before traveling to local rival Western New England, the third-ranked team in New England, on Wednesday to play the Golden Bears for the second time in four days.
