Lafayette Earns Academic All-District Honors

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State University senior designated hitter Alex Lafayette (Ludlow, Mass.) has been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

The team recognizes the nation's top student athletes for their performances on the field and in the classroom.

Lafayette was a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference first-team All-Conference selection as a designated hitter.

The Owls' big bat, a 2-year transfer from NCAA Division II American International College, ranks among the leading hitters in the conference in almost every category. He's hitting .329 with six home runs and 34 runs batted in while starting and playing in all 41 games this season. Lafayette leads the Owls with 54 hits, and 13 doubles, and has scored 30 runs.

In the classroom, Lafayette has maintained a 3.60 grade-point average while majoring in business management.

Westfield State is 24-16 this season and claimed the 2018 MASCAC regular season and MASCAC titles, earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Westfield will begin tournament play in the Auburn, N.Y. Regional on Thursday, May 17, with a game against the region's top seed, SUNY-Cortland.

Lafayette was selected to the District 1 team, which encompasses schools from Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

The All-District selections advance to the Academic All-America ballot, with the national award winners announced in June.
