Big G Sets Record for K's

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State junior left-handed pitcher John Gegetskas (Academy of Sport and Medical Sciences/Windsor, Conn.) broke the school's single-season strikeout record on Saturday, fanning 11 hitters in a 9-0 win over Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

Gegetskas outing on Saturday solidified him as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference pitcher of the week, as he picked up a save in an Owls' midweek win over Fitchburg State.

Gegetskas now has 74 strikeouts for the year in 51.1 innings pitched. That breaks the 41-year old record of 71 k's, set by Owls' Hall of Famer Mark 'Poison Pen' Pananos in 1977.

Gegetskas has a 6-1 record this season, with nine appearances and eight starts. He's allowed just 33 hits and has a 1.75 ERA.

Slated to start this weekend, Gegetskas will have the opportunity to match to match or exceed several more school record categories this season.

Gegetskas currently ranks 13th in the country in NCAA Division III in strikeouts per nine innings with 12.97.
