Several Owls Earn Weekly Conference Honors

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State Athletics placed four student-athletes on two different weekly honor rolls for the week ending February 9, 2020.

Freshman Brendon Hamilton (Worcester, Mass.) took home the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's basketball Rookie of the Week honors. Hamilton averaged 13 points, 9.5 rebounds, and two assists while shooting 70.6 percent from the floor (12-17) in a 2-0 week for the Owls. He finished with 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting along with 12 rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block in the 72-55 win over Fitchburg State and added eight points, seven rebounds and two assists in the 97-87 win over Worcester State.

Freshman Grace Phair (Stockbridge, Mass.) was awarded another MASCAC Rookie of the Week award for women's track and field. Phair crossed the line first in the 1000 meter run with a time 3:08.99, helping the Owls to a fourth place finish at the Coast Guard Academy Winter Invite.

Men's ice hockey goaltender Thierry Messervier (Montreal, Quebec) picked up the MASCAC Goalie of the Week honors. Messervier finished with a .963 save percentage and 1.00 GAA with 51 saves in a perfect 2-0 week for the Owls. He made 26 saves in the 5-0 shutout victory over Worcester State and tallied 25 saves in the 5-2 win over Salem State and also had an assist on the fourth goal of the game, making it his first goalie assist of his career at Westfield State.

Junior Melissa Gray (Peabody, Mass.) was honored as the New England Women's Basketball Association's Co-Player of the Week. Gray scored 26 points on 7-10 shooting from three point range in a 92-64 win over Fitchburg, and added a 19-point, 11 rebound, 5 assist, 3 block performance as the Owls rallied from an 11-point third quarter deficit to defeat Worcester State 87-80. She averaged 22.5 points and 8.5 rebounds with 4 assists and 2 steals per game while shooting 48 percent from the floor and 62.5 percent from three point range.
