Five Owls Earn Weekly Conference Honors

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State University saw five student-athletes earn weekly conference awards for the past week of competition.

On the women's volleyball front, Brianna Starkey (Rockland, Mass.) took the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Player of the Week. Starkey averaged 13.67 kills, 4.67 blocks and two digs while hitting .279 in a 2-1 week for the Owls. She added 22 kills, six blocks (two solo) and two digs in a huge conference win over Framingham State. Starkey also had 12 kills, five blocks (two solo) and a dig in the 3-1 setback to Elms College earlier in the week.

Ryan Koczela (Bridgewater, Mass.) earned the MASCAC men's golf Player of the Week, shooting a 70-73-143 (-1) at the Elms College Blazer Invitational over the weekend. Koczela won the individual title after defeating Springfield's Mike Strong in a four-hole playoff, leading the Owls to their third-straight team title.

The MASCAC men's soccer Player of the Week went to Ryan Della Penna (Enfield, Conn. / Suffield). Della Penna scored the game-winner in a 3-2 overtime conference win over Bridgewater State, and added an assist earlier in the game to earn his first Player of the Week award this season.

Westfield State also had two rookies of the week in freshmen Marissa Jacob (Jefferson, Mass.) and Sophie Morini (Florence, Mass.)

Jacob was deemed the MASCAC women's soccer Rookie of the Week after her goal and assist in the Owls' 4-1 win over Bridgewater State.

Morini was named the Little East Conference field hockey Rookie of the Week after handing out a pair of assists in the Owls' 4-0 win over Bridgewater State for the first two points of her collegiate career Saturday. It was Westfield State's first conference victory of the 2019 campaign.
