Ellen (Carey) Leahy accumulated many honors and school records during her outstanding three-year basketball career at Westfield State College in the early 1990s. 

The 1992 Westfield State graduate set 24 school records in leading the Owls to two Massachusetts State Conference championships and an ECAC Tournament berth. She was the conference co-Player of the Year during her senior year in 1992 and a three-time first-team all-conference selection. 

Leahy also was a second team All New England selection in 1992 when the Owls posted a then school record of 22 wins and seven losses and won their first and only conference postseason tournament. Westfield shared the conference regular season crown during her during year in 1991. 

The athletic 5-9 forward currently ranks second on Westfield’s all-time scoring list with 1,495 points, but she excelled at both ends of the court. She still holds school career records for scoring average (18.7 points per game), free throws made (455) and attempted (664), rebounds (869), and ranks third in steals (237). She averaged 10.9 rebounds, three assists and three steals per game during her collegiate career. 

Leahy’s 572 points and 326 rebounds during her senior year remain school records. She also holds single season records for consecutive free throws made (17), and free throws made (178) and attempted (247). She holds the following game records: consecutive field goals made (10), rebounds (22), free throws made (20) and attempted (25), and field goal percentage (10 of 11 attempts). 

Leahy also excelled in the classroom, as she was a first-team selection in 1992 and a second team choice in 1991 on the college sports information directors’ District I All Academic team. 

The Weymouth, Mass., native was a three-sport standout in basketball, softball, and volleyball at Archbishop Williams High School. She attended Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., her freshman year before transferring to Westfield State. 

Following her graduation from Westfield State, Leahy taught early childhood special education for seven years in the South Shore Education Collaborative. During this time, she earned a master’s degree in special education at Bridgewater State. 

Leahy now works part-time at the South Shore Education Collaborative as a behavior consultant in special education. She and her husband, Kevin, reside in Hanson, Mass., with their four children: Sean (5), Erin (4), Timothy (3), and Caitlin (18 months).
