Sports: Men's Cross Country Men's Track & Field

Tom Maher (’92) is regarded as one of the best big-meet performers in the storied Westfield men’s track and field program. Maher participated in six national championships, the most in school history, and achieved All-America honors when he placed second in the 800 meter run at the 1992 NCAA indoor championships.

The hard-working middle distance runner achieved All-New England status 11 times, four in the All-New England (all divisions) championships and seven in New England Division III. In addition, he was a member of seven Westfield relay teams that earned All-New England honors.

Maher was the New England Division III indoor champion in the 500 meter run in 1992. He placed second in the 800 meter run the same year at the All-New England championships in a school record time of 1:51.47. Maher, whose best high school time was 1:58.5, was timed in 1:52.33 when he placed second in the NCAA national championships.

Maher also participated in cross country and was an all-conference runner all four years. Focusing his training for regional and national meets, Maher claimed two Mass. State Conference crowns, in 1991 (400 meter run) and 1990 (800).

Maher was considered a team leader for the Owls. He was injured days before the 1992 conference championships when he was helping close a window in the college library. Unable to compete in his final home meet, he cheered the youthful Westfield team to its 10th straight MASCAC championships. And despite the discomforting injury he placed second in the 800 meter run the following week to lead Westfield to 10th place in the New England Division III outdoor championships.

The Norwood native now resides in Newton, Mass, with his wife, Loretta, and daughter Ella (5). He is employed as a plumber and heating technician.
