All-American running back Shawn Lyman was key member of the Owls 2001 football team that set school records with a 10-0 regular season and advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship playoffs for the first time in school history.

In 2001, Lyman was a Hewlett-Packard honorable mention All-American, ECAC All New England First Team, New England Football Writers Division 2/3 All-Star, All-East Region Third Team, NEFC All-Conference First Team, the Westfield State Offensive Player of the Year, and won the Hal Chalmers Scholar-Athlete Award from New England Football Conference.

Lyman set Owls’ single season records with 1,483 rushing yards, 14 rushing touchdowns and 84 points scored his senior year. As the third leading rusher in NCAA Division III that season, Lyman led the NEFC by averaging 145.2 yards per game, led the Owls in scoring with 14 touchdowns, and was a first-team All-New England selection. 

Lyman also led the Owls in rushing his junior season totaling 683 yards on the season on 166 carries with six touchdowns.

Throughout his four-year career at Westfield State, Lyman totaled 608 carries, rushed for 2,690 yards, scored 24 touchdowns, made eight receptions for 75 yards and scored 144 points in 36 games played. At the time of induction he ranks as the the fifth all-time leading rusher in Westfield State history and is seventh in career scoring.

Lyman’s stellar senior season almost ended abruptly after the fourth game, when he was called to active military duty at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee in the wake of the September 11, 2001 tragedy. Despite working 60-65 hours per week at the base, Lyman continued to carry a full course load while carrying the Owls to their championship season.

Lyman is currently a K9 Police Officer for the City of Boca Raton, FL.  With his K9 partner Max, an 8.5 year old German Shepherd, the duo are well known throughout South Florida, having competed against state, national and international teams in the South Florida K9 Competition from 2012 – 2016. Lyman and K9 Max have placed every year in the obstacle course competition, winning first place in 2013.   

He was recently elected as one of two Representatives for the Florida Law Enforcement Canine Association (FLECA ) for all of Palm Beach County.

Lyman, who resides in Boca Raton, Florida, is active within the schools in the City of Boca Raton, and has been recognized by several of the schools in the city for his involvement with the students.

In his spare time Lyman enjoys golf, and playing in softball and flag football Leagues. He has also volunteered time with helping coach youth football teams in Florida.
