Westfield State cross-country and track and field athlete Mia McDonald has been selected as one of nine students who will be recognized with the President’s Award for Excellence in Leadership.
"The MASCAC Presidents have been continuously observing the pandemic and guidelines from local, state, federal and NCAA officials which has led us to the decision to cancel winter sports
competition during the spring semester," said Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts President James Birge, Chair of the MASCAC Council of Presidents in the statement.
Westfield State University’s men’s and women’s track and field teams, and athletes Amy O’Sullivan (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield HS) and William Canty (S. Grafton, Mass./Grafton HS), were recently recognized with 2020 All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The class includes soccer standout Denis Dugas ‘76, NCAA high jump national champion Marlee Berg-Haryasz ‘09, Chris Lapointe ‘04, quarterback of the 2001 undefeated season football team, record-setting volleyball hitter Lindsay (Skaret) Gundersen ‘07, all-conference soccer midfielder Chris Streeter ‘98, and longtime coach and athletic director Ken Magarian ’71. The 1978 ECAC Championship men’s ice hockey team will be recognized as a team of distinction.
Menard was a two-time national champion at Westfield State, winning the NCAA Division III cross country individual title in 1981 and the 3,000 meters in the 1982 outdoor track season.
Westfield State track and field athletes Lauren Gilderdale and William Canty have both been named as 2020 Indoor Track and Field All-Americans by the US Track and Field and Cross Country Collegiate Coaches Association.
Senior track and field athlete Lauren Gilderdale (Monterey, MA/Housatonic (Conn.) HS) and senior volleyball middle hitter Brianna Starkey (Rockland, MA/Rockland) have been honored as the Westfield State University Female Athletes of the Year for the 2019-20 academic year.
"Sports really helped push me outward at Westfield State – to my different classes, professors, random people on campus know what we do in athletics and recognize how we represent WSU, and I'm proud of that," said Gilderdale.
