Canty Sets School Record in Heptathlon, Earns All NE Honors

WESTFIELD, Mass. –   Westfield State senior William Canty (S. Grafton, Mass.) set a school record in the heptathlon, scoring 4955 points as he placed second at the New England Division III men's track and field championships at Springfield College on Saturday.

Canty topped his own school-record mark of a year ago by more than 350 points.

He won the shot put with a toss of 12.32m (40-05.00) and placed second in the pole vault, clearing 4.05m (13-03.50), the 60 hurdles in 8.56 seconds, the 1000 meter run in 2:51.98, and the 60 dash in 7.15 seconds.

Canty placed second behind Amherst College's Troy Holleran who finished with 5,048 points. The top-8 placing from Canty will earn All-New England honors. 

Canty accounted for all of the Owls team scoring at the meet with 8 points, as the Owls finished 17th among 24 scoring schools at the meet.  MIT won the team meet with 171 points.

Owls senior Zac Bentley (Acushnet, Mass./ Taunton) ran a personal best time of 4:24.40 in finishing 12th in the mile, while senior Corey Pooler (Middleboro, Mass.) ran another best of 1:25.65 in placing 16th in the 600 meters.
