Westfield State junior William Canty won the New England Division 3 championship in the 400 meters, and ran a leg of the Owls champion 4x400 relay to highlight the Owls performances at the meet at Williams College on Friday and Saturday.

Westfield State sophomore Owen Ortiz won both the long jump and the triple jump to lead Westfield State’s men’s track and field team at the 2019 MASCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Fitchburg, Mass. On Saturday.

Sophomore Mitch Maslowski (Berlin, Conn.) ran 21.79 in winning the 200 meter dash, a time that has him inside the top 20 in the nation, in helping to lead the Owls to a win in their Jerry Gravel Invitational meet at the Gravel Track on Saturday.

The meet is named after coach Jerry Gravel founded the Westfield State men's track and field program in 1969, and developed it into one of the most successful division 3 programs in Massachusetts. Gravel was the head coach of the Westfield State Track and Field program for 28 seasons before retiring in 1997. From 1972 to 1997, Gravel won 20 out of 26 MASCAC championships, including 13 consecutive titles within that span. He also founded the Cross Country program at Westfield State, and coached 32 All-American student-athletes in his time as head coach.

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State senior Tim Forrest won the 10,000 meters on Saturday at the Corsair Classic track and field meet in North Dartmouth, Mass., leading the Owls to a second-place team finish at the team’s first outdoor meet of the season.

When junior Zac Bentley, a member of the cross country and indoor/outdoor track teams, made the decision to transfer to Westfield State as a sophomore, he was looking for a fresh start and a place where he could make an impact. Just a little over a year later, and Bentley has done just that, being voted as the president of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee this past semester.

The Westfield State men's track and field team was voted second in the MASCAC preseason coaches’ poll for the upcoming outdoor season.
