Salve Regina Tops Owls, 5-3


WESTFIELD, Mass. - Colin Clapton (Canton, Mass.) and Paul Boutoussov (Dana Point, Calif.) each scored two goals to help lead Salve Regina University to a 5-3 win over Westfield State University on the final day of the Martha's Vineyard tournament Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks improve to 12-3-2 on the season while the Owls are now 3-9-1 overall.

Clapton put Salve Regina ahead with a goal just one minute into the first period to lead 1-0.

The Owls responded in the second period with two goals of their own, the first coming from freshman Danny Ferri (Chelmsford, Mass.) at 14:01 and the second from Carl Greco (Niagara Falls, Ont.) at 18:58 to lead 2-1.

Salve Regina dominated the third period and Westfield couldn't find the time to make up the deficit. The Seahawks would find the back of the net twice more with back to back goals from Boutoussov capped off with a goal from Jack Billings to increase the lead to 4-2.

The Owls responded at 15:11 with a goal from sophomore Daniel Backstrom (Helsinki, Finland) to make it 4-3.

Clapton scored an empty net goal at 19:38 to secure the 5-3 victory over the Owls.

Westfield State will host UMass Dartmouth in a conference game on January 18th at 7:35 p.m.
