Hockey Holds Ravens at Bay, 4-3

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State University got goals from four different players as the Owls held off Franklin Pierce College, 4-3, in a non-conference men's ice hockey game at Amelia Park on Tuesday night.

Westfield State improves to 2-5 with the win, while Franklin Pierce drops to 2-5 with the loss.

The Owls took a 3-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of the game, with goals from Donavan Gardiner, Jeremy Young and Pearce Vance. Westfield had a chance to make it a 4-0 lead with a penalty shot try late in the period, bit the Owls Robert Neuwirth was stonewalled by Ravens' goalkeeper Tom McGuckin.

The Ravens took advantage of the momentum, and netted their first goal of the game on the power play moments later with Alex Lester scoring off good puck movement from Evan Marek and James Morrissey.

In the second period, the Ravens cut the lead to 3-2 with Lester adding his second power play goal of the night 7:34 into the period.

Westfield got what proved to be the game winner at the 9:16 mark of the period as senior forward Nik Passero redirected David Chavis' shot from the left point into the far upper corner for a 4-2 Owls' lead.

Cameron Shepardson cut the lead back to 4-3, scoring the Ravens' third power play goal of the night in a scramble in front of the net, but the Owls held on down the stretch as McGuckin came off for an extra skater in the final minute.

McGuckin finished with 21 saves for the Ravens, while Owls sophomore Kameron Limberg stopped 34 shots. Gardiner finished with a goal and two assists for Westfield, with Chavis tallying a pair of assists.

Lester finished with two goals and an assist for Franklin Pierce.

Westfield State will break for Thanksgiving before hosting Fitchburg State in a MASCAC conference game on Thursday, November 30 at 7:35 p.m.

Franklin Pierce will next travel to Wesleyan on Saturday, November 25.
