Clancy Leads Owls past UMass Dartmouth in OT Thriller


WESTFIELD, Mass. - Junior Aaron Clancy (Quincy, Mass.) scored four goals including the game winning goal 1:37 into overtime to lead the Westfield State University hockey team to a 5-4 victory over UMass Dartmouth in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference game at Amelia Park Ice Arena Thursday night.

The Owls improve to 4-9-1 on the season and 2-6-0 in the MASCAC. The Corsairs are now 7-9-1 overall and 4-5-1 in conference play.

Westfield State grabbed an early lead with two goals from Clancy and another from senior Nik Passero (Fort Erie, Ont.) to lead 3-1 midway through the second period.

UMass Dartmouth responded with two of their own from junior Brendan McDonough (Wilmington, Mass.) and junior Jonathan Ruiz (Williamstown, N.J.) to tie the game 3-3 in the 14th minute of the second period.

Clancy scored his third goal off a rebound from Robert Neuwirth (Zlin, Czech Republic) in the 13th minute of the third to put the Owls ahead 4-3. The Corsairs bounced right back with a goal from senior Mike Sones (Waterdown, Ont.) assisted by Jerry Laakso (Tampere, Finland) and Ruiz to tie the game, 4-4.

Neither team was able to score in the final minutes of the third, sending the game into overtime.



With 1:37 left in OT, Clancy redirected a shot from junior Carl Greco (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and Passero to clinch the 5-4 conference win.

Westfield State got 37 saves in net from sophomore Kameron Limburg (Howell, Mich.) while senior Drew Michals (Newton, Mass.) finished with 32 for UMass Dartmouth.

The Owls will travel to Worcester State on Saturday, January 20th for a MASCAC game at 3:30 p.m.

UMass Dartmouth will host Framingham State on January 20th in a conference match at 4:30 p.m.
