Nate Martins joined the Westfield State men's basketball staff for 2017-18.

Since then Martins has been a key component of the Owls recent success, as the team posted back-to-back MASCAC Championships in 2020 and 2022 (with play cancelled during the 2021 season due to the pandemic).

He has held responsibilities in all areas of Westfield State's program, including on-floor coaching, scouting, film exchange, practices and academic monitoring.   He also spearheads recruiting, fundraising and community outreach while supervising assistant coaches and team managers.

His diverse experiences and positive attitude have helped him bring a unique and invaluable approach to coaching and education, and helped develop strong team bonds to both the program and the university as a whole.

Prior to Westfield State, Martins’ most recent coaching stop was a four-year stint as boys’ varsity head coach at Rockville High School in Vernon, Conn., from 2013 through 2017.  Martins served as an assistant coach at Elms College in Chicopee from 2007-09, where he helped the Blazers to a 26-win season and national rankings in several categories.   He also has experience with the SECC All-Stars AAU program, where he coached former Owls’ standouts Andre King and Jesus Sanchez.

Martins has previously held various coaching positions at Northampton, East Longmeadow, and Westfield High Schools.  He has also coached at the Five-Star Basketball Camp in Briarcliff, N.Y. since 2008.

Martins holds a Bachelor of Science degree in social work and a Master's Degree in social work from Westfield State University.
