Framingham, Mass. – Westfield State's Cam Callagher (Uxbridge, Mass.) caught six passes for 102 yards and a pair of TD's, but the Owls fell to defending conference champ Framingham State 48-21 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) opener for both schools at Bowditch Field this afternoon.
Framingham senior QB Adam Wojenski (Stratford, Conn.) who swas the recipient of the 2019 Calder Award which is presented annually to the most valuable player of the Framingham Homecoming Day game in memory of former Ram John Calder. Wojenski completed 19 of 28 pass attempts for 230 yards with two TDs, while also rushing for 59 yards on six carries with a TD.
The Rams built a 34-0 first half lead before the Owls finally got on the scoreboard with a 17-yard TD pass from Jake Cassidy (Salem, Mass/Lawrence Academy) to Gallagher just before halftime.
In the second half, Framingham tacked on a pair of scored to lead 48-7, before the Owls mounted a mild fourth-quarter rally with a 4-yard TD run from Shaquille Adjei (Worcester/Doherty), and a 24-yard Peyton Capizzi -to-Gallagher scoring strike.
Adjei finished with seven carries for 57 yards for the Owls, with Shane Clark (Bellows Falls, Vt.) adding 67 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Cassidy finished 10-28 passing for 109 yards with a TD and 2 INT's.
George Cole (Chelmsford) led the Westfield State defense with 11 tackles.
For Framingham, freshman Devaun Ford (Mashpee, Mass.) rushed for 97 yards in the game on 20 carries and found the end zone once, while senior Jacob Maher (Marshfield, Mass.) carried the ball six times for 11 yards, but recorded a pair of rushing scores. Maher also made four receptions for 45 yards with a receiving TD and blocked a kick that led to another Rams score.
The Rams (1-2, 1-0 MASCAC) are on the bye next weekend and return to the field the following week when they host UMass Dartmouth at Bowditch Field, while the Owls (0-3, 0-1 MASCAC) will host Massachusetts Maritime Academy next Saturday at 2 p.m. as part of Westfield State's homecoming and family weekend.
