Nowadays, the top eight finishers are accorded All America status.

He garnered All New England Division III honors eight times, including four in the 1500 meter run and two in the 1600 meter relay. At the same meet he set the record, he came back to run as a “rabbit” for Olympian Steve Scott in the invitational mile that produced a rare sub four-minute mile indoors.

During his senior year, Campbell was the conference champion in the 800 and 1500 meter runs and as a member of the 1600 relay.

In cross country, Campbell was the individual runner-up at the 1989 and 1990 conference championships. During his freshman year, he was a key member of the 1987 squad that placed third in the New England regional qualifier and qualified for the NCAA Division III national championships.

The Owls achieved much success during Campbell’s collegiate career. Westfield won four straight conference cross country crowns and four consecutive outdoor track and field conference championships. The Owls placed 10th in the 1988 indoor track and field national championships and second in the New England Division III outdoor championships. Westfield finished third in the 1989 New England Division III outdoor track and field championships.

Campbell's running career continued well after college when he joined the Boston Athletic Association’s (BAA) elite track team with a number if his former high school and college teammates. He was a member of the 4 by 800 meter relay team that finished third for the BAA at the 1995 USA indoor track and field championships.

He retired from competitive racing in 1995 and enrolled in graduate school at U-Mass Amherst, graduating in 1997 with a master's degree in regional planning.

During his high school days at Cambridge Rindge & Latin, Campbell claimed the 1987 New England 800 meter title with a still record time of 1:51.96.

Campbell is employed by the Boston Redevelopment Authority as a senior project manager. He has been a Boston Marathon volunteer since 1988, serving as the team captain escort for the BAA invited elite athletes program.

Campbell resides in the Hyde Park section of Boston with his wife, Cheryl, and three children: Lance Jr. (6), Savannah (4) and Myles (1). He is the second Hall of Fame inductee from his family as Cheryl – a seven-time All American hurdler at Ithaca College – had the prestigious honor bestowed upon her two years ago.
