UPDATE - March 16, 2020 - 11:00 A.M.

Westfield State University athletics regrets to announce that with the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference's announcement (below) that the league will cancel the spring sport seasons and championships, Westfield State will also formally cancel all spring sports for the 2020 season.  While we had hoped that there would be an opportunity for our Smith-Cup leading athletic programs to have the opportunity to continue their seasons at some point this spring, updated guidance from the Governor's office indicates that this is the most prudent move for student and community safety at this unprecedented point in time.

The NCAA has announced plans for eligibility waivers for all 2020 spring sport athletes affected by the cancellations due to COVID-19.  Westfield State athletics will make further guidance on applying for eligibility waivers available to Owls' student-athletes as it is announced by the NCAA.

Current student athletes should continue to complete all academic work as directed by their professors, whether through online or alternative delivery methods, or when/if return to campus occurs.  The University's main coronavirus update page is available at http://www.westfield.ma.edu//student-life/health-services/coronavirus-update with official University updates as they occur.

Westfield State plans to resume all intercollegiate athletics programs in the fall of 2020, and encourages both current and prospective student-athletes to stay in touch with their coaching staff and complete all necessary steps for enrollment, and housing for the fall semester.  Westfield State athletics coaches, administration and staff will be available by phone and e-mail to answer questions, concerns, and academic support issues.

Intercollegiate athletics helps instill many life values, including overcoming challenges, resiliency, and teamwork.   We salute our spring- student athletes for their contributions to our athletics program, and their resiliency in the face of this challenge.  For those graduating who do not plan to extend their eligibility, thank you for all you have contributed to Westfield State athletics, and we wish you well in your future plans.  "Once an Owl, Always an Owl!"

MASCAC Statement - 3/16/2020 - 9:00 A.M.

The Massachusetts State Universities and the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) have been monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak.  Given the increasing number of confirmed cases and restrictions on the size of gatherings and school closures, the MASCAC would not be able to provide a meaningful student-athlete experience.  As such with heavy hearts, the MASCAC will cancel the spring season and championships.  Please continue to follow CDC and government recommendations and stay safe.

Update;  March 13, 2020 - 8:30 AM

With the NCAA announcing that they have cancelled all winter and spring sport 2020 championships, Westfield State athletics has now suspended all of its sport operations out of an abundance of caution in the interest of the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and staff.

Teams and athletes currently travelling for spring break competition and the NCAA Track and Field Championships will be returning from those trips as scheduled.  No further games or meets will be contested on those trips in concert with Thursday's NCAA announcement.

MASCAC Update 3/13/2020 - noon

The MASCAC announced on Friday, March 13 that it is suspending spring contests and practices.

March 11, 2020

In conjunction with the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, and our sister institutions, Westfield State University athletics will be suspending all varsity athletics competitions and practices from Sunday, March 15, through Monday, March 30.

Our teams currently in Florida for spring break competitions (baseball, softball, and women's lacrosse) and our track and field athletes currently at the NCAA Championships in North Carolina will complete those competitions as scheduled before returning to Massachusetts.

While we hope that practice and competition will be able to resume at the point that students are allowed to return to campus, that decision will be made in conjunction with the guidelines that the Governor's office, the University, the Council of Presidents, MASCAC and NCAA have in place at that time.

This is obviously a disappointing development for all of Westfield State athletics, as our highly successful student-athletes and teams strive to compete. However, we need to keep the health and safety of all of our student-athletes in the forefront at this time in light of the current COVID-19 virus.  All these moves have been made with an eye on both student & community safety, and efforts to keep open the opportunity for our student-athletes to continue to compete.
