Owls Get The Candy, 3-0 Over ECSU on Halloween Night

WESTFIELD, Mass. -  Westfield State's Bridgette McAndrews (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Lauren Carnes (Westfield, Mass.) each posted double figures in kills to lead the Owls to a 3-0 non-conference volleyball win over Eastern Connecticut State University at the Woodward Center on Tuesday evening.

Westfield improves to 9-17 overall while the Warriors level their overall record at 12-12.

The Owls prevailed by set scores of 25-18, 25-19, and 25-18.

Eastern Connecticut jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, but then Westfield's Sarah Bingham (Reno, Nev.) served seven straight points for the Owls as they swayed the tide, grabbing a 9-5 lead on an ace from Bingham.

The Owls got kills from Carnes and Olivia Harris (Massapequa, N.Y.) to polish off the set.

In the second set, Eastern again jumped in front, this time by a 9-2 score before the Owls gritted their way back into the match.  Back to back kills from Carnes at 17-all broke open the set.

Westfield held sway by a few points for most of the third set, capping the match with well-placed kill from Julia Bartiet (Cheshire, Conn.) for the final.

McAndrews posted 15 kills and and 13 digs to lead Westfield.   Carnes added 12 kills, and Bartiet and Harris six each.    Michaela O'Connor (Shrewsbury, Mass.)  had a strong game receiving serves and finished with 29 digs.   Morgan Dority (Walpole, Mass.)  dished out 24 assists.

Eastern Connecticut was led by nine kills from Brooke Praskievicz (Moodus, Conn.) and seven from Taylor Smith (Bowie, Md.).  Liz Squier (Trevoer, Wisc.)  paced the Warriors with 15 kills, and Sadie Blackwell (Southbury, Conn.) turned in a team-best 14 digs.

Westfield will travel to Fitchburg State for a conference match up on Friday, Nov. 3 before closing out the regular-season schedule with a match at Brandeis on Nov. 4.   The Owls have secured a semifinal round home game in the MASCAC playoffs, which begin Nov. 9.

Eastern Connecticut will next host UMass Boston on Saturday in a  Little East Conference matchup.
