WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Westfield State Owls women's volleyball team defeated the MCLA Trailblazers in four sets (25-18, 14-25, 25-15, 25-20) at the Woodward Center on Wednesday, Oct. 20. Westfield's five seniors, Andraya Scibilio (Weymouth, Mass./ Weymouth), Ashley Crowley (Billerica, Mass./ Billerica Memorial), Shawna Crowley (Billerica, Mass./ Billerica Memorial), Liv Elie (Rockland, Mass./ Rockland) and Jessica Haradon (Mansfield, Mass./ Mansfield), were recognized prior to the match for their contributions to the program.

The win keeps the Owls in second place in the MASCAC standings with a 5-1 conference record and 6-17 overall. The Trailblazers fall to 3-3 in the MASCAC and 9-9 overall.

The Owls erased a two- point deficit (11-9) midway through the opener with an eight- point run to gain control of the set. Bridgette McAndrews (Longmeadow, Mass./ Longmeadow) toed the service line during the outburst adding two of her three aces in that span.

Sets two through four went to the team with best start. MCLA responded in the second grabbing an 8-1 advantage and cruising to a 25-14 win to even the match. The Owls picked up the final two sets to seal the win behind a 9-3 lead in the third and a 7-1 start in the fourth.  

Ashley Crowley, Shawna Crowley and McAndrews recorded double- digit kills and digs for the Owls. All three landed 14 kills, Ashley picked up 18 digs, Shawna had 13 and McAndrews chipped in 10. Julia Dangel-Garcia (Ashland, Mass./ Ashland) coordinated the offensive attack with a match-high 47 assists and helped on the defensive end with 10 digs. Haradon posted a match-leading 22 digs and added three aces in the win.

MCLA's offence was paced by Reagan Scattergood (Rhineback, N.Y./ Rhineback Central) and Chloie Garber (Eagle River, Ariz./ Eagle River) who had 12 and 11 kills respectively. Scattergood picked up a double- double with 11 digs. Natasha Stewart (North Andover, Mass./ North Andover) dished out 33 assists in the setback and also connected for two aces and 13 digs. Kelly Moczulski (New River, Ariz./ Anthem Preparatory Academy) led the Trailblazers with 19 digs. Ellie Walter-Goodspeed (Auburn, Wash./ Auburn Riverside) added 12 digs.

Both teams return to action this weekend, Westfield heads to the Hall of Fame tournament for three matches and opens at Smith on Friday, Oct. 22 at 6:00 p.m. The Trailblazers head north to Castleton State for a tri-match with UMass Dartmouth on Sunday, Oct. 24 with 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. starts.
