Owls Take Down Framingham on Senior Day, 3-2

WESTFIELD, Mass.  – The Westfield State University women's volleyball team defeated Framingham State University 3-2 in closely-contested MASCAC action Saturday afternoon at the Woodward Center.

Framingham State took the opening set 25-16 before the Owls narrowly took the second 25-23. The Rams rebounded in the third frame taking it 25-19, before Westfield once again came back and took the fourth 25-23, setting up a decisive fifth set.

In the fifth, the game was tied 4-4 before the Owls rattled off three straight points including a pair of kills from Ashley Crowley (Billerica, Mass.) to take a 7-4 lead. The Owls pushed the lead to 10-5, but the Rams closed the game to 13-10 on a kill from freshman Brandee Thomas (North Kingstown, RI). The Owls would close out the match with two straight points to seal the five set victory.

Brianna Starkey led the Owls in kills with 19 and added nine digs, while Crowley finished the match with 11 kills, nine digs and two blocks.

Jess Haradon (Mansfield, Mass.) paced the defensive effort for the Owls with a team-best 21 digs, while Ally Rega (Chelmsford, Mass.) added 17 and 36 set assists.

With the victory, the Owls improve to 5-2 in the MASCAC to secure the third seed in the MASCAC Tournament, while the Rams dropped to 4-3 and will be the fourth seed. Both teams will be back in action next week for the 2018 MASCAC Volleyball Championship Tournament. Both teams will host quarterfinal matches on Tuesday night.
