Mammoths Stampede Owls 3-0

WESTFIELD, Mass.  – AMHERST, Mass. – The Westfield State women's volleyball dropped three sets on Wednesday night with a 3-0 loss to Amherst College in non-conference action at LeFrak Gymnasium.

 With scores of 25-12, 25-12, and 25-16, Amherst moved to 11-2 on the year, while dropping the Owls to 3-16.

 Emily Kolsky '20 had 12 kills and hit .323 for the Amherst offense, who tallied six service aces and nine blocks in the victory. Middle Claire Dennis '20 assisted on six of those blocks, while Lauren Reppert '19 had four block assists and six kills.

 Adelaide Shunk '21 served during a 9-0 run in the opening set to help the Mammoths jump out to a 21-8 lead as they cruised to a 1-0 match advantage.

 Westfield State, led by eight kills from Brianna Starkey (Rockland, Mass.), actually led in each of the three games, but Amherst turned a 4-1 Owls advantage in the second set into a 16-10 lead with the help of kills by Cameron Hendricks '20, Samara Phillips '21 and Kolsky, as well as a service ace by Charlotte Duran '20, who had 15 assists.

 Shunk had 14 assists for the Mammoths, and first year Sierra Cox added the first five assists of her collegiate career in the third set to help close out the match.

 Westfield State saw Hanna Simpkins (Walpole, N.H.) total five kills and seven digs, and were led defensively by 12 digs from Jess Haradon (Mansfield, Mass.). Ally Rega (Chelmsford, Mass.) posted 16 assists and seven digs.

 Amherst travels to two New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rivals this weekend, heading to Tufts on Friday night and then playing at Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon.

 The Owls play at Springfield College Friday night with action beginning at 6:00 p.m.
