Popp Named New England DIII Champion

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State University's junior Lexi Popp (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) was named the New England Division III Champion after a school record performance in the 400-meter hurdles at the New England Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by MIT on May 3-5.

Popp won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:00.26, setting a new school record and a New England Division III outdoor record.

Junior Kerri Long (Weymouth, Mass.), and seniors Jessie Cardin (Sutton, Mass.) and Sabrina Pray (Mansfield, Mass.) each earned All-New England Division III All-Region Honors after placing within the top eight in their respective events.

Long finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.32), Cardin placed seventh in the 1500-meter race (4:39.58), and Pray finished third in the 100-meter hurdles (14.47).

The Owls' 4x100meter relay team of senior Ashley Craig (Groton, Mass. / Westford Academy), Popp, Long, and Pray also earned New England Honors after a strong fourth place finish (48.69).

Westfield State placed 12th (of 33) as a team with a total of 25 points. MIT placed first (161), Williams College followed in second (69) and Coast Guard Academy finished third (60).

Westfield State will travel to Hanover, NH on May 11-12 for the NEICAAA Championships.
