WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State University's men's and women's track teams opened the 2018 outdoor season at the Snowflake Classic meet at Tufts University on Saturday, placing fourth among 22 scoring teams at the meet.

Senior Jessie Cardin (Sutton, Mass.) led the way for the Owl women by winning the 3000 steeplechase in 10:57.56, currently the third-fastest time in NCAA Division 3 in the first three weeks of outdoor competition.

Junior Lexi Popp (Westford, Mass.) topped the 400 hurdles in a sharp 1:04.34, which would currently be fast enough for a qualifying spot in the NCAA championship meet.

Other top competitors for the Owls included senior Sabrina Pray (Mansfield, Mass.), who placed second in the 100 hurdles in 15.63, junior Kerri Long (Weymouth, Mass.) took third in 1:07.41 in the 400 hurdles, and senior Ashley Craig (Westford Academy/Groton, Mass.) placed third in the pole vault with a top height of 3.55m (11'-07.75").

The Owls 4x100 and 4x400 both finished third as well.
