Sharks Snag Westfield, 164-132

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State sophomore Kait Kelly won a pair of races, but the Owls fell to Simmons College, 164-132 in a tightly contested women's swimming and diving meet at the Ely Pool meet on Sunday.

The Owls got off to a fast start, winning the 200 medley relay, with Kelly swimming the leadoff backstroke leg.

Kelly also claimed wins in the 50 backstroke (29.25) and the 100 backstroke (1:03.20).

Laura List, Laura Simpson and Kerry Fleming each won a pair of races to feed the Sharks victory.  Westfield trailed by just 10 points with two events left in the meet, but Fleming touched the wall first in the 100 IM and the Sharks A and B relays took the top two spots in the final event, the 200 free relay, to seal the win.

For Westfield, senior diver Monique Groux swept the 1- meter and 3-meter events.  The Owls also got wins from Kelsey Johnstone and Shannon Fitzsimmons in the season opening meet.

The Owls are 0-1 in dual meets, while Simmons improves to 1-0.

Westfield will be back in the pool next Saturday, competing at the Smith Relays.
