WESTFIELD, Mass. – Gordon College goalkeeper Emily Bengston made six saves to shutout Westfield State, 2-0, in the Owls season-opening women's soccer match at Wenham, Mass., on Sunday afternoon.
The Fighting Scots grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute of play on a goal from Eowyn Lapp and never looked back. Nina Ruiz tacked on an insurance goal in the 83rd minute for the 2-0 final.
Westfield got four saves in goal from Julia Robak.
Gordon (1-0) held a 12-9 edge in total shots, and a 3-1 margin in corner kicks.
Westfield (0-1) will travel to the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday for a non-conference match that kicks off at 7:00 p.m.
