SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 10, 2019) – The Western New England University women's soccer team used a late goal from junior Bee Murphy (Monson, Mass.) to secure a 2-1, non-conference victory over Westfield State University on Thursday afternoon at Suprenant Field.

Murphy tallied her third goal of the season, while freshman Summer Hathaway (Colchester, Vt.) scored the opener for the Golden Bears. Sophomore Allison Bruehwiler (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and senior Jordan Gilmore (Waterbury, Conn.) were credited with assists on the goals by Hathaway and Murphy, respectively.
Making her second straight start in net, sophomore Shannon Murphy (Halifax, Mass.) finished with five saves.

Westfield State was led offensively by sophomore Jenn Rennich (Bedford, Mass.), who accounted for the Owls' lone goal early in the contest.

The Golden Bears struck first just 6:41 into the game following a corner kick taken by Bruehwiler, as Hathaway was able to guide the ball into the net to make it 1-0.

Four minutes later, the Owls equalized when junior Lydia Kinsman (Granville, Mass.) sent a pass from the end line to Rennich, who was wide open in the middle of the box. Rennich placed her one-timed shot past the dive of Murphy and into the lower right corner of the net.

The score remained tied for the rest of the half and for the majority of the second half, until the Golden Bears regained the lead in the 81st minute. Gilmore sent a cross into the box from the right side and Westfield State freshman goalie Lauren Butler (Spencer, Mass.) was unable to secure the ball, allowing Murphy to slot home the game-winner.
Western New England (5-6-2) resumes CCC play on Saturday at Gordon. Westfield State (6-5-1) hosts Framingham State in MASCAC action on Saturday.
