Lacrosse Lances Worcester, 16-4


WORCESTER, Mass. -- Senior midfielder Stephanie Godek (West Springfield, Mass.) scored three goals to lead Westfield State University's women's lacrosse team to a 16-4 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) victory over Worcester State University at Coughlin Field Saturday.

The Owls improve to 13-2 on the season and 5-0 in the MASCAC while the Lancers are now 8-7 overall and 2-3 in league play.

Worcester State's sophomore Kaylee Krajewski (Holyoke, Mass.) began the game with a goal just 47 seconds into the game after an assist from sophomore Kelly Austin (Brimfield, Mass.) to give the Lancers their only lead of the game at 1-0.

Junior Marissa Nimeskern (Hanover, Mass.) began the Owls scoring flurry with a goal coming off a free position shot, Godek led the charge with three in the half for the Owls with senior Rachel Testa (Westminster, Mass.), senior Hunter Zackaricz (Southampton, Mass.), and sophomore Sam Danohoe (Pepperell, Mass.) all chipping in with one goal each in the half. Junior teammate Lucy Barrett (Williamstown, Mass.) added two of her own, giving Westfield State a decisive 11-1 lead at the half.

Worcester State started the second half similar to the first, with senior Mackenzie Little (Marlborough, Mass.) finding the back of the net at 27:11 to make it 11-2.

The Lancers would score three more goals in the second half with senior Little netting two goals in the half to lead the Lancer offense in goals.

Westfield State was able to put up five goals in the stanza bringing their total up to 16 on the game.

Samantha Coyle (Weymouth, Mass.) tied for the team lead in ground balls, to go along with her goal and assist while freshman Sara Stapleton (Dedham, Mass.) also had a goal to pair with her two ground balls.

Little recorded two goals in the game, being one of the three different Lancers to score. On the Westfield side, there were ten different players who scored on 16 goals.

The Owls completed 23 of their 26 clear attempts while Worcester State cleared 11 of their 13 attempts.

Both teams recorded double-digit turnovers on the game with Westfield winning the turnover battle 15 to 22.

Westfield State junior goalie Maria Woodall (Norfolk, Mass. / King Philip) made nine saves while allowing four goals in 55 minutes played.

Worcester State's freshman goalkeeper (Sturbridge, Mass.) played the full game, making four saves and allowing 16 goals.

Westfield State will travel to MCLA on Wednesday, April 25th for a MASCAC game at 6:00 p.m.

The Lancers have two games remaining on the docket as they will travel to Fitchburg State on April 25th followed by a game at Salem State on the 28th to close out the regular season.
