Women's Golf Opens Campaign at Mt. Holyoke

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State University's women's golf team opened the 2017-18 year with an 18th place finish at the Mount Holyoke Invitational Tournament at the Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass. on September 23 and 24.

The Owls were led by junior Bailey Loughlin, who posted a 2-day total of 201, including the Owls low round of the weekend with a 95 on Sunday. Kyla Murphy posted 112-105-271 and Tia Pariseau was third among Westfield's student athletes with 118-108-226.

The tournament gave the Owls a preview of competition in the newly formed Empire 8 women's golf league. The Owls will compete in the league as an affiliate member, and fellow affiliates Husson, Johnson and Wales, Rhode Island College and Suffolk also competed at the tournament.

Westfield scored a pair of dual matches with Suffolk University on the weekend as well. Suffolk emerged a 399-457 victor on Saturday and took a 370-425 decision on Sunday as both teams improved after a look at the venerable Orchards, which hosted the 2004 U.S. Women's Open and the 2002 NCAA Women's NCAA Championship among many significant events on the Donald Ross designed course.

Westfield will be back in action next weekend at the Middlebury Invitational at the Ralph Myhre Course on the Middlebuy College campus.
