Women's Golf Ninth at Empire 8 Championship

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State placed ninth as a team at the first-ever Empire 8 Conference Women's Golf Tournament at Ballston Spa Country Club in Ballston Spa, N.Y. on Saturday and Sunday.

Westfield placed ninth in the 12-team championship with a score of 853 in the Owls first-ever conference championship meet, which won by Cortland (NY) State with a score of 682. The Empire 8 formally formed the women's golf league last spring, with hopes of the champion gaining an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships after a mandatory two-year waiting period. Westfield State had competed as an independent for the first nine-seasons of competition.

Westfield shot 444 as a team on the opening day, improving to 409 on day two.

Kyla Murphy (Southampton, Mass.) was the top Owl, shooting 101-92-193 to place 20th in the 61 golfer field. Bailey Loughlin (Maynard, Mass.) was 28th with a score of 110-93-203 over the par-72, 5,804 yard parkland layout built in 1925.

Cortland State's Tiffany Schapira was the medalist with a two day total of 82-82-164. Cortland swept the top four placings.

Westfield State has now wrapped up the fall portion of its schedule.
