Owls Run Past MHC, 79-46

WESTFIELD, Mass. –  Westfield State women's basketball used a 32-0 run in the first half to put the game away early, as the Owls posted a 79-46 win over Mount Holyoke College at the Howard Gymnasium in South Hadley on Tuesday night.
 
The Owls were led by 13 points from Olivia Hadla (Westfield, Mass.) and 11 points from Maddie Pond (Holyoke, Mass./Hampshire Regional).
 
Westfield (5-1) led 16-12 after the Lyons' Marley Berano made a jumper with 4:38 left in the first quarter.  From there, Westfield scored the next 32 points, capped by a Lindsey Bohenko (Lowell, Mass./Central Catholic) jumper with 2:16 left in the first half that gave the Owls a 48-12 lead.  Hadla nailed a three pointer and added a layup to start the scoring outburst, and Jess Gardner(Webster, Mass./Holy Name) scored seven of her nine points in the big run.
 
Westfield led 50-16 at the half, after outscoring Mount Holyoke 25-4 in the second quarter.
 
Westfield forced 21 Lyons' turnovers in the scoring run.   Westfield forced 50 turnovers from Mount Holyoke in the game, just two short of the Owls' program record and the second-best total in school history.   Westfield grabbed 32 steals, led by six from Hannah Sheldon (Taunton, Mass./Norton) and five from Pond.
 
Cal McGonagle led MHC (1-4) with 12 points.
 
Westfied will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at New England College.
