Women's Hoops Falls At Smith, 97-70

Katelyn Pickunka scored 19 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead Smith College to a 97-70 win over Westfield State University in a non-conference women's basketball game at the Ainsworth Gym in Northampton on Tuesday evening.

Leading 26-17 at the end of the first quarter, Smith grabbed a decided advantage in the second quarter, outscoring the Owls 30-15 in the frame to take a 56-32 lead into the half.

Westfield (3-6) never got untracked shooting, finishing 22-81 (27.2 percent) from the floor and 9-41 (22 percent from three point range.

Smith (8-0) countered by handling the Owls presure defense well, committing just 22 turnovers on the evening, while the Pioneers finished the night shooting 38-69 (55 percent) from the floor and a blistering 8-16 from three point range.

Melissa Gray led Westfield with 19 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Lauren Legere added 12 points and Chelsea Moussette 10 for the Owls.

Westfield will be back in action on Friday night, traveling to Springfield College for a 7 p.m. start at Blake Arena.
