Westfield State junior forward Melissa Gray (Peabody, Mass.) was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball player of the week, as sponsored by GEICO, after a school-record performance, the league announced on Monday.
Gray broke the Owls' school record with a 14-steal performance in Westfield's 87-84 loss to the Sage (N.Y.) Colleges on Saturday. Gray helped the Owls to force 51 turnovers from the Gators, as the Westfield attempted to rally from a 17-point second half deficit, which they trimmed down to a single point, 85-84 on Gray's three-pointer with three seconds left in regulation.
Gray finished with 22 points, 14 steals and five rebounds, and added a 12-point, 5-steal performance in a 99-90 loss at Albertus Magnus College earlier in the week.
For the season Gray averages 16.3 points per game, 5.5 steals and 4.5 rebounds per game.
Westfield is 3-5 overall this season. The Owls will play at local rival Smith College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
