Westfield's Women to Play in Fifth Straight Conference Title Game

Westfield State's women's basketball team will be playing in its fifth straight conference tournament title game when they play at #1 seed Worcester State on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm.

The Owls are looking for their fourth straight MASCAC title after winning in 2016,'17, and '18.

Second-seeded Westfield advanced in the semifinals beating Bridgewater state 94-85 Thursday night.

Worcester State advanced to the championship game by defeating Framingham State 81-64 in the semifinals.

Westfield State is led by senior Lucy Barrett and sophomore Melissa Gray. Barrett leads the team in points per game with 19.1 and had 27 points in the semifinals to help advance the Owls in the championship game. Gray is second on the team in scoring with 17.5 points per game. Gray came up huge for Westfield in the semifinals scoring 34 points and knocking down seven three pointers.

Worcester State is led by seniors Brittany Herring and Kate Surprenant. Herring is second on the team in scoring with 12.4 points per game and third on the team in rebounding with 7.2. Herring led her team past Framingham in the semifinals scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Surprenant is first on the team in scoring with 12.5 points per game. She scored 17 points in the semifinals against Framingham State.

Last time these two teams played Westfield won in a close game 82-77. Melissa Gray and Lucy Barret scored 19 points to help lead the Owls past Worcester State. For Worcester State Brittany Herring scored 32 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Kaitlyn Berkel chipped in by scoring 12 points for the Lancers. The first time these two teams met in the beginning of the year Worcester State won at home 94-79. Worcester had all five starters scoring in double figures and Brittany Herring led the team with 26 points. For Westfield State Lucy Barrett and Kierra McCarthy scored 14 points each for the Owls.

The Winner will win the 2019 Massachusetts State Collegiate Conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament.
