Shutout, No-Hitter As Owls Sweep Bucs

WESTFIELD, Mass.  –  Westfield State's Katherine Canty (Natick, Mass.) tossed a complete-game shutout in game one, and Gianna Conte (Greenfield, Mass.) and Stephanie Scoville (Northfield/Pioneer Valley) combined for a rain-shortened no-hitter in game two as Westfield State swept Mass Maritime in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Rollins Field in Buzzards Bay, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon.

Westfield won game one by a 10-0 final and game two 7-0, in a game that was called in the sixth inning due to rain.

Westfield is now 13-4-1 overall and 2-0 in the MASCAC, while the Buccaneers are 9-5, 0-4 in the MASCAC.

In the opener Canty (W, 2-0) scattered three hits, and struck out nine while walking just two.  She did not allow a base runner until there were 2 out in the bottom of the fourth inning

Westfield jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Christina Ciampa  (Rockville, Conn./Vernon-Rockville) got the scoring started with an RBI single, and the Owls added three more on an error, a groundout and fielder's choice.

Westfield tacked on another run in the when Hannah Wodecki (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Reg.) singled and later scored on Alyssa Clark's (Uxbridge, Mass./Blackstone Valley) sacrifice fly to center field.

Ciampa and Abby Clark (Uxbridge, Mass./Blackstone Valley) each had three hits.  Clark hit a pair of triples, scored twice and drove in a run.

MMA starter Jennamarie Klemp (L, 5-3) went the distance, yielding 15 hits and eight earned runs, striking out four and walking just one.

In the nightcap, Westfield's Conte and Scoville (W, 6-2) combined for the no-hitter and the shutout.  Conte worked two innings, striking out one and walking none, while Scoville tossed the final three innings while striking out four and walking two.

Westfield again got out of the gates quickly as the first two hitters of the game reached, and Wodecki followed with a 2-run double to stake the Owls to a 2-0 lead after just a half inning.

Two innings later Wodecki added solo shot to left to improve the Westfield lead to 3-0.  Sarah Hough (Southwick, Mass.)  tacked on a 2 RBI double to center to build a 5-0 lead.

Wodecki drove in two more with a double in the sixth inning to extend the lead to the final 7-0.  Wodecki finished 3-4 with five runs batted in.

The Owls are unbeaten in their last eight games, with a 7-0-1 mark in that stretch.

Ashley Catlett (L,4-2) started and took the pitching loss for the Buccaneers.

Westfield is next scheduled to play a conference doubleheader at Worcester State on Saturday, with a 12:00 noon start.

The Buccaneers will next travel to Fitchburg State on Saturday for a conference doubleheader.
