Owls Lose Heartbreaker to #18 Coe on Final Day of Spring Trip

WESTFIELD, Mass.  –   Westfield State put up a valiant effort in the final game of their softball trip to Florida, falling to #18 ranked Coe (IA) College, 4-3 in eight innings.

The Owls dropped a 10-2 decision to Rochester (NY) Institute of Technology in the first game of the day.   Westfield winds up the trip with a 6-4 overall record.

Coe jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a base hit by Heather Boeckenstedt, who stole second and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Madi Parson.

The Kohawks added two more in the top of the ninth, extending the lead to back to on doubles from Addi Menke and Boeckenstedt to extend the lead to 3-0.

Westfield rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

The Owls got a 1-out double from Abby Clark, followed by singles from Sarah Bingham and Christina Ciampa, and were aided by a hit batsman and an error in the inning.

In the eighth, using the international tiebreaker, Shaylee Dodd came around to score from second base to give Coe the 4-3 lead.  

Westfield put two aboard in the home half of the inning but couldn't muster a tying run.  The Kohawks improved to 11-3 on the season with the win.

Bingham finished with a pair of hits for the Owls.  Westfield starter Stephanie Scoville went the distance and took the hard-luck loss.

In the opener, RIT jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back.  The Tigers tacked on five runs in the third, then pushed another across in the sixth to end the game early by the 8-run rule. Tigers' starter Jessica Majot scattered four hits and struck out six as RIT improved to 3-5 with the win.
