WESTFIELD, Mass.  –  Westfield State softball swept a pair of games on Sunday in Naples, Fla., to start the 2023 campaign.

The Owls scored a 1-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior, and a 3-2, extra innings win over Western Connecticut.

In the opener, Westfield's Hannah Wodecki (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire) tripled and then scored on Mia Alfonso's (Dalton, Mass./Pittsfield) base hit in the first inning.  That would prove to be all the offense the Owls would need, as starter Katherine Canty (Natick, Mass.) and reliever Stephanie Scoville (Northfield, Mass./Pioneer Valley) shut down the Yellowjackets on just three hits.   Canty garnered the win, and Scoville a save.

Wodecki again delivered the big hit in game two, as her base hit plated Kiana Kalman (Somers, Conn.) with the game winning run in the eighth inning, as Kalman started the inning on second base via the international tie breaker rule.    Wodecki finished 3-4 on the afternoon.

Scoville picked up the win in relief of Canty, tossing five innings while allowing two hits, two walks, and two runs while striking out seven.

Westfield is back in action bright and early tomorrow with a 9:00 AM start, facing Penn State-Altoona in game 1 and Pitt-Bradford in game 2, both at North Collier Park in Naples.
