WESTFIELD, Mass.  – Westfield State pounded out 11 hits, including three from sophomore catcher Lexus Mastromatteo (Worcester, Mass./Shrewsbury HS), as the Owls posted a 6-2 win in game 2 of a MASCAC doubleheader at Worcester State to earn a split of the twin bill and hand the lancers their first loss in league play this season at Ralph Raymond Diamond in Worcester.

The Lancers topped the Owls, 2-1 in game one of the twinbill.   Westfield State is now 11-15 overall and 4-2 in the MASCAC, while Worcester is 12-14 and 5-1 in the conference.

Westfield jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game 2, as Mastromatteo delivered a two-out, bases loaded base hit to right center to score Colleen Hughes (Hanson, Mass.)  and Jordyn Lummus (Pittsfield, Mass.).

Worcester got one run back in the bottom of the third on a triple and a squeeze bunt, but the Owls responded with one of their own in the top of the fourth, when Lindsay Cordopatri (Walpole, Mass.) singled and stole second, and Hughes plated her with an RBI single for her team-leading 26th run driven in in as many games played.

In the top of the 6th, Hughes drove in Mastromatteo for the second time on the day.  Westfield added two more in the top of the 7th on RBI singles by Megan Metzger (Uxbridge, Mass.) and Canty who helped herself with the base knock.

Westfield's first-year pitcher Katherine Canty (Natick, Mass.) earned her third win in her last three starts to improve to 3-4 on the season.   She allowed three run on seven hits and two walks while striking out six.

Starter Molly Glynn (Abington, Mass.) (1-4) took the loss for the Lancers.

In Game 1, the Owls jumped out to a, 1-0, lead in the top of the first.  Senior leadoff batter Cordopatri doubled to open the game and came around on a single to left by shortstop Alyssa Clark (Uxbridge, Mass.)

The third inning proved to be the decisive frame as the Lancers posted two runs on a 2-run single by sophomore Lauren Dube (Leominster, Mass.) scoring first year Abigail Koziol (Lunenburg, Mass.) and pitcher Emily Bartlett (Lowell, Mass.).

Bartlett (6-6) was strong in the circle as well as she scattered six hits and struck out eight on the afternoon.  Westfield State pitcher Steph Scoville (Northbridge, Mass.) (7-5) took the loss for Westfield State.

Worcester's Koziol was the only multi-hit player in Game 1 going 3 for 3.

Westfield State will be back in action at home on Monday, hosting Bridgewater State in a key Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.
