Owls Bats Stay Hot in Doubleheader Sweep of Baruch

WESTFIELD, Mass.  – Westfield State University kept the hot bats warm on Sunday, posting a 9-1 and 20-8 sweep of Baruch (NY) College In a non-conference softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

Westfield improved to 8-14 with the two wins, while Baruch is now 10-6.

In game one, Westfield State pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on RBI singles from Colleen Hughes and Meghan Doyle.

Starter Stephanie Scoville (W, 3-5 )worked out of jam in the top of the second, loading the bases with two out before getting Jessica Davis on a swinging strikeout to end the inning.

In the bottom of second Westfield's Christina Ciampa singled through the left side. Lindsay Cordopatri laid down a bunt.  Ciampa took a big turn around second, and when Bearcats catcher Bridget Campanelli threw behind her, the throw got away to center field and both runners came all the way around to score.

Westfield's Jordyn Lummus reached on a wild pitch strike three, and Hughes launched a high fly home run to left field. For a 6-0 Owls lead.

Hughes finished 3-4 with four RBI, while Cordopatri and Ciampa each had a pair of hits.

Carly Quint (L, 4-4) took the pitching loss for Baruch. 

Scoville struck out 10 while walking two and allowing just three hits.

In game 2, the Owls got bookend home runs from Cordopatri to open the bottom of the first, then Sarah Bingham rapped a 3-run home run in the bottom of the fourth that sealed the win for the Owls in a wild 20-8 finale.

Baruch's Jordyn Schwartz (L, 0-1) was making her first pitching appearance of the season and was promptly  welcomed with a solo home run to left from Cordopatri on a fly ball aided by the strong wind blowing out.

Schwartz weathered a 77 minutes, 64 pitch first inning where she yielded 11 runs before settling in to toss shutout innings in the second and third.

Michaela Bruno had an RBI single and an RBI double in the first as the Owls batted around.  Lexus Mastromatteo had an RBI double to spark a 4-for-4 day at the plate.

Baruch answered with a single run in the second on base hits from Schwartz and Mircelis Parades, five runs in the third with the big blow a bases-loaded, bases clearing double from Parades, and two in the fourth that trimmed Westfield's lead to 11-8.

Gabby Giannantoni (W, 1-1) relieved starter Gianna Conte, and limited the damage, going 2.2 innings in relief and allowing just one earned run while striking out two to ean the pitching win in relief.

The Owls bought the eight-run rule into play by scoring nine runs in the bottom of the fourth to boost the least to 20-8, as two runs scored on a sacrifice fly from Victoria Quill, with an error allowing the second run to score before the flood gates opened.

Parades finished 2-3 with four RBI, and Schwartz added a pair of hits and two runs scored for Baruch.

Bingham launched a sky high fly ball down the line in left, and with left fielder Emilia Zakoscielny drifting back to the wall, the ball hit off her glove and went over the fence for a 3-run homer for Bingham to cap he scoring.

Bruno finished 3-3 with three runs scored.

Westfield State will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting Keene State in a doubleheader rescheduled from earlier this season.
