Softball Sweeps Mass Maritime

Westfield State softball swept Mass Maritime Academy by scores of 13-0 and 17-6 in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader in Buzzards Bay on Saturday.

Junior shortstop Alyssa Clark (Uxbridge, Mass.) ripped a pair of home runs in the opener, launching a 2-run shot in the third inning and a 3-run blast in the sixth. Christina Ciampa rapped a 2-run blast in the sixth inning as well.

First-year pitcher Katherine Canty (Natick, Mass.) tossed a complete-game, 2-hit shutout, striking out 11 and walking just one with just one walk, while earning her first collegiate win.

Clark finished 2-4 with five runs batted in, with senior 3B Meghan Doyle (Marshfield, Mass.) going 4-4 at the plate with two runs scored and three runs batted in..

In the nightcap, the Owls continued the scoring barrage.  The game was tied 4-4 after two innings, but Victoria Quill's (Raynham, Mass.) rbi single gave the Owls the lead for good, as the Owls scored at least one run in every inning.

Colleen Hughes (Hanson, Mass.) finished 3-5 at the plate with four runs batted in; she was 5-8 in the doubleheader with four runs scored and six runs batted in.

Michaela Bruno (Rockland, Mass.) added a pair of triples for the Owls, and Gianna Conte (Greenfield, Mass.) delivered a 2-run double in the seventh inning.

Senior pitcher Brenna Welch (Halifax, Mass.) tossed a complete game for the Owls, striking out six to earn the win.

The Owls are back in action on Sunday, hosting a doubleheader against Baruch College with a 1:00 p.m. start.
