WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State softball scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie and defeat Keene State College, 7-4 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon.

Keene State took a 3-2 decision in game two.

In the opener, Westfield scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, two on a Colleen Hughes double and another on Jordyn Carpenter's base hit to take a 3-0 lead.

Keene scored four runs in the fifth to breifly grab the lead as Molly St. Germain doubled home two runs, and Alexis Blanchette's RBI single gave KSC a 4-3 lead.

Westfield responded with one in the bottom of the fifth as Caitlin Hughes plated Maddie Keigwin with an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.

The Owls grabbed the lead on Bri Tortora's single in the hole to shortstop, and Kaitlynn Prophet followed with a 2-run single to break the game open.    Westfield starter Emily Arredondo went the distance to earn her seventh win of the season.

In the night cap, Keene's Blanchette lined a solo home run to center field in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie and send Keene home a winner.

Kayla Soucie factored in both scoring plays for the Westfield, scoring the first run on wild pitch in the bottom of the third, then her infield single gave Westfield a 2-1 lead in the fourth.

St. Germain, who had come on in relief in game 1 and took the loss, again came on in game two, earning the win to mover her record to 7-12 on the season.  Keene is now 13-21 on the season.

Westfield is now 12-24 on the season.  It was announced today that Westfield State will be the #3 seed in this week's MASCAC tournament.  The Owls will host a first-round tournament game against #6 Worcester State at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1.
