Woodworth Spins One-Hitter in Owls Split


WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State University sophomore Emily Woodworth (Marlborough, Mass.) threw a one-hitter in the second game of a non-conference softball doubleheader against Western New England University, leading the Owls to an 11-0 victory and a split with the visiting Golden Bears Wednesday evening at Alumni Field.

Westfield State is now 6-12 on the season while Western New England is now 11-11 overall.

In the opener, the Golden Bears came out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning off of an RBI single from Carlie Moss (Bethlehem Central/ Delmar, N.Y.)

The Owls would answer in the bottom half with two runs of their own after an RBI single to right field off the bat of senior Angelica Banning (Suffield HS, E. Granby, Conn). Senior teammate Michaela LeBlanc (Marblehead, Mass.) would follow with a double, sending junior Karly Mastello (Westfield HS/Russell, Mass) home.

Scoring was stuck at a standstill until the top of the fifth, when Western New England put up three runs to reclaim the 4-2 lead. Back to back singles by Tori Fisher (Averill Park/ Poestenkill, N.Y.) and Allie Buzzeo (Stamford, Conn) put runners on for the Golden Bears. Another single by Jenn Luba (Terryville HS/ Plymouth, Conn) would knock in Fisher. Paige Uliase (Francis T. Maloney HS/ Meriden, Conn) would follow up with an RBI single of her own.

Western New England would add two more runs to pad the lead in the top of he sixth off a two RBI double by Luba to give the Golden Bears a 6-2 victory over the Owls.

Westfield State would respond by ending the second game via mercy rule with the Owls grabbing an 11-0 win over the Golden Bears.

Woodworth went three and a third innings without allowing a hit. After a base hit by Western New England's Fisher, she would not allow another through the next two innings.

Westfield State came out to a hot start scoring five runs in the first inning. Mastello and Banning each led the way with a pair of RBI's for the Owls.

It was the bottom half of the first inning with the bases loaded for the Owls. Westfield scored two after an error and a collision at the plate. After RBI singles from Mastello and Banning and an additional sac fly from freshman Jackie Reynolds (Middleborough, Mass), the Owls had their quick 5-0 start.

Westfield went on to add three runs in the third and another three in the fourth to give them the 11-0 lead behind the strong performance by Woodworth.

The Owls will host a MASCAC doubleheader against Salem State University on Saturday, April 14th with games beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Western New England University will travel to the University of New England on April 13th for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
