CLERMONT, Fla. - Westfield State University softball rallied to force extra innings against FDU-Florham, but the Owls fell by a 9-8 final in extra innings at Legends Way Fields on Thursday.

In the second game of the day, the Owls dropped another heartbreaker, 3-2 to the University of New England.

The Owls are off to a 1-7 start in Florida, but the Owls have had little luck as well, with a pair of one run losses and two extra-innings defeats.

Against FDU, the Devils took a 5-1 lead into the fifth and a 7-2 lead into the sixth, but Westfield State rallied for five runs in the sixth inning to force the extra frame. Kara Fluet drove in a pair of runs with a base hit, Maddy Atkocaitis delivered an RBI triple, and Caitlin Hughes' infield hit scored the game-tying run.

The Devils tallied twice as the game went to the tiebreaker in the eighth inning, but Westfield wasn't done, scoring Lindsay Cordopatri on Kayla Soucie's fielder's choice, but the Owls couldn't get a tying run across.

Emily Arredondo took the pitching loss for the Owls, tossing a complete game. Atkocaitis finished with three hits, while Fluet and Bri Tortora each had two.

In the nightcap, the Owls trailed UNE 3-0 into the sixth inning. Westfield rallied for a pair of runs as Cordopatri singled to lead off the inning and stole second and third, and scored on Hughes' base hit. Jessica Scoville pinch-ran for Hughes and stole second and advanced to third on an error, scoring on Karly Mastello's single. Mastello stole second, but the Owls' rally died there as Angelica Banning grounded out to end the inning.

Westfield got a runner to third base with two out in the seventh, but Nor'easters starter Sydney Bessler worked out of the jam to preserve the win.

The Owls conclude their spring trip on Friday with a pair of games against the University of Wisconsin-Stout, and Plymouth State University.
