Nekitopoulos Wins Mile at Massassoit Classic

WESTFIELD, Mass.  – Westfield State senior John Nekitopoulos won the men's mile to highlight the Owls performances at the Massassoit Classic meet at Springfield College on Saturday.

The Owls finished third among the six competing teams in the team scoring. Owls' conference foe Bridgewater won the meet with 222 points, followed by Springfield (163), Westfield (134), Wheaton (63), Worcester State (16), and Hampshire (5).

Nekitopulous ran 4:35.68 in his winning effort.  Teammates Gordon Johnson and Scott Porter placed third and fourth in the race.   Nekitopoulos added a second-place mark in the 3000 meters in 9:14.17.

Other top performers for Westfield included:

Ali Warsame second in the triple jump (12.63m), just ahead of Colby Ranck in third (12.20m).

Rowan Gottschall turned in a strong performance in the 1000 meters, finishing third in 2:44.22.

Will Buckley placed third in the 5000 with a time of 17:17.70.

Westfield will be back on track next Saturday at the Wesleyan Invitational meet in Middletown, Conn.
