Men’s Track and Field Begin 2022-23 Campaign at Springfield College Invite

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State first-year jumper Brogan Madden (Northborough, Mass.) placed second in the high jump as the Owls opened the 2022-23 season at the Springfield College Invite on Saturday.

Madden began his collegiate career on a high note, leaping the bar at a height of 1.85 meters to earn a second-place finish.

The Owls had a multitude of top five performances on the afternoon including two in the 1000-meter run by first-years' Gordon Johnson (Hanson, Mass.) and Rowan Gottshall (West Simsbury, Mass.). Johnson placed fourth in the event with a mark of 2:45.20. Gottshall crossed the finish line five seconds later, earning fifth place with a time of 2:50.75.

First-year Justin Kennedy (Holyoke, Mass.) continued the list of strong rookie performances for Westfield, taking fourth place at the 600-meter run with a time of 1:29.65.

Graduate student Mike Maher (Attleboro, Mass.) tallied a fifth-place finish in the mile run by crossing the tape at a mark of 4:50.40 with sophomore Will Buckley (Plymouth, Mass.) following closely behind in sixth place (4:51.91).

In the field events, first-year Cameron Ranck (Chicopee, Mass.) collected a fourth-place tally at the triple jump, recording a leap of 12.63 meters. Junior Colby Ranck (Chicopee, Mass.) finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 6.38 meters.

Senior Shane Clark (Bellows Falls, Vt.) earned a fifth-place toss at the shot put, hurling the shot a distance of 12.41 meters. Junior Dylan Clark (Bellows Falls, Vt.) logged seventh place in the shot put and sixth in the weight throw (13.00m).

Westfield State will next compete at the Pioneer Winter Classic on Saturday, December 10 at Utica College in Utica, N.Y.
