WESTFIELD, Mass.  – Westfield State University senior multi-event athlete William Canty (Grafton HS/S. Grafton, Mass.) has added Academic All-District honors, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Canty was named to the Men's Track and Field and Cross Country All-District team after a year in which he qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championship meet in the heptathlon.  While the meet was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Canty was recognized with All-America honors in the heptathlon from the US Track and Field and Cross Country Collegiate Coaches Association.

During the winter 2020 indoor track and field season, Canty won the MASCAC 60-meter hurdle title and set a school record in the heptathlon, scoring 4,955 points as he placed second at the New England Division III indoor men's track and field championships. Canty topped his own school-record mark of a year ago by more than 350 points.

He was an All-American outdoors in the decathlon in the spring of 2019.

Canty was also a classroom standout as a movement science major, where he carried a 3.33 GPA.  Canty earned the University's John Kurty award as the top four-year senior male athlete.

Canty is the second Owls' athlete to earn academic All-District honors this year, as baseball player Casey Boudreau (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was recognized earlier this spring.

The 2020 Academic All-District® Men's Track & Field / Cross Country Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
