Owen Ortiz Named Field Athlete of the Week; Canty Picks Up Honor Roll

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State Junior Owen Ortiz (Greenfield, Mass.) was named this week's Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week, as sponsored by Geico. Senior William Canty (South Grafton, Mass.) was named on this week's MASCAC Track and Field honor roll. 

Ortiz took home two titles in the long jump (7.02m/ 23" 0.5") and conquering his personal best in the triple jump (13.88m/ 13.38m /43' 10.75). He finished in fourth place in the 60 meter dash (7.18) at the 2020 MASCAC Men's indoor track and field championship. 

The versatile Canty took home first place in the 60 meter hurdles (8.49) beating the second place runner by 2/100th of a second. Also came in fourth in the long jump (6.37m/ 20' 10.75"), fifth in both the 60 meter dash (7.19) and 200 meters (22.85) and then sixth in the pole vault (3.55m/11' 7.75"), scoring points in five different individual events.

Ortiz and Canty helped to lead the Owls to a second-place finish at the conference championship meet.

On Friday February 28th the men will race in the New England Division III championship at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.
