Track Teams Set for MASCAC Championships

Westfield State's men's and women's track and field teams will compete at the 2018 MASCAC/New England Alliance Championship Meet on Saturday, hosted by Rhode Island College and UMass Dartmouth, at the Providence Career and Technical Academy Fieldhouse in Providence, R.I. The meet will begin with the field events at noon.

The Westfield State women earned 227 points last year to win the MASCAC title with a narrow victory over Bridgewater State. The Owls grabbed six individual titles and a relay crown. Jessie Cardin shattered the 5,000 meter MASCAC and New England Alliance record then later in the day took home the MASCAC title in the 3,000 and mile. Ashley Monahan won the 600 meter run with a new MASCAC record time. Autumn Brown was the first place finisher for the MASCAC in the 800 meter run. On the field side, Ashley Craig claimed the pole vault title. The Owls took home the crown in the 4x800 meter relay with a MASCAC record breaking time led by Mary Elizabeth Dignan, Monahan, Cardin and Brown.

At last year's meet, the Worcester State grabbed their first conference team title with 198 points outdistancing runner-up Westfield State which finished second with 164 points.

Westfield State took home two individual titles and a relay in 2017. Connor Gottzmann was first in the 1,000 meter run. On the field side, Dereck Stone claimed the long jump league honor. In the 4x800 meter relay, Tevin Cintron, Pat Brett, Gottzmann and Sam Harding finished first.
