Canty Sets School Record in Heptathlon

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State sophomore William Canty placed fourth in the men's heptathlon Harvard University Multi-Event indoor track and field meet on Saturday, January 13, setting a presumed school record with 4,453 points.

Canty's best individual event placing was in the pole vault, where he cleared 3.85 meters (12'7.5") to merit fourth among 14 competitors in the event. Canty picked up his best single event point total in the 60 meter dash, totaling 799 points with a time of 7.24 seconds.

The heptathlon consists of seven events; 60 meter dash, 1000 meter run, 60 meter hurdles, high jump, pole vault, long jump and shot put.

Canty was the only competitor from an NCAA Division III institution in the meet, which consisted primarily of Division I athletes. Harvard sophomore Anthony DiNitto won the heptathlon with a score of 4,863.
